Groove on multiple computers not synchronising correctly.

November 10, 2007 by Wayne Small 2 Comments

I’ve been trying to get into Groove and things were working pretty well. I use it on my desktop and my laptop with all workspaces shared between the two of them. However recently I got a new laptop and desktop. They didn’t come at the same time, but with a few months between them. I got the new desktop first and set it up. I exported my groove account info to a file which I saved on my server. I then imported it to the new desktop and things were ok. Sync worked and all workspaces were up to date. Then I got the new laptop complete with Vista. I setup groove and imported the account file I saved on the server a few months back. I left it to sync. I then noticed however that it was showing some workspaces that I had deleted as downloading forever. Whats more is that it didn’t show any of the newer workspaces I had created more recently. Frustration!!! I tried to google for it but could not find anything relevant. So I turned to the Microsoft Newsgroups. In the Microsoft.public.groove group I posted of my troubles and got a number of responses, and from this I learned.

#1 your old computer needs to be turned on if you want things to replicate correctly ok I had assumed that the groove data in my workspaces was “out there” somewhere in the cloud and that was how it sync’d my mistake.

#2 The account information file I saved a few months back, contains a lot more than account information. It also contains the information about the workspaces I have sync’d and this was my main issue.

I was given a list of KB articles too which further helped me to learn about how Groove works. Here they are in case you ever need them.

There are a few KBs that may provide insights in transferring workspaces with your Groove accounts.

My thanks to Jan Talens, c1sbc and Gregg Johnston for helping guide me to the correct answers. I was about to dump Groove because I could not make it work reliably these guys helped point me in the right direction.

I have been tasked with supporting Groove and I would greatly appreciate any info regarding how communications work in Groove i.e.
    1. When someone logs into Groove how are they autheticated?
    2. How do workspaces get updated / synchronised?
    3. What is the function of a relay server?
    4. What is the function of a management server.

Any information regarding comms issues would be greatly appreciated and any links to good sites or articles.

    Thanks in advance.
