I’m presenting today at TechEd New Zealand a session on migrating your SBS 2003 network over to SBS 2008. As an aid to the attendees and my failing memory, I’m putting this post together to list all the key resources you need to perform a migration using the Microsoft methods.
1. Download and READ the SBS Migration Whitepaper – current version is available here
2. Download and PRINT the SBS Migration Checklist – current version is available here
3. Run the SBS 2003 Best Practices Analyser BEFORE you commence migration – current version is available here
4. Run the Exchange 2003 Best Practices Analyser BEFORE you commence migration – current version is available here
5. Download and run through the SBS 2008 Migration demo – current version is available here
6. Run the IT Environment Health Scanner BEFORE you commence migration – current version is available here
7. Do a separate system state backup of your SBS 2003 server BEFORE you install SBS 2008 into the domain in migration mode. This is THE fastest way to get back to a preinstall state and it only takes a few minutes to do it.
All the above tools and procedures can / should be read in the weeks BEFORE the migration to ensure smooth changeover to the new SBS 2008 server.
