I’ve got my Surface 3 for the last few years, and it’s been running on various builds on the Windows Insider program. Since April however, it’s become extremely unstable and has had frequent lockups and Green Screens of Death (GSOD). I’ve tried to troubleshoot the issue, but it’s not been stable enough at times to do anything. So unstable has it been that I’ve resorted to pen and paper for note taking during meetings instead of OneNote.
I’ve tried to break out of the Windows Insider program a few times, and done various forms of refresh and reset to the Surface, but the always fail. I’d get the error message of “There was a problem resetting your PC”. No matter what I did, it remained the same.
My research suggested various possible solutions all involving messing with registry files, which I tend to try to avoid if possible, or doing a fresh install using the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, however the thing that worked for me was to use the reagent command do disable and re-enable the WinRE environment. I’d never played with this before, but now I’m aware of it, I might go exploring.
Thanks to Stephen Owen’s blog post here https://foxdeploy.com/2017/03/13/solved-windows-10-reset-there-was-a-problem-resetting-your-pc/ where I picked up this very handy solution!
Now – lets see how my Surface 3 performs now over the next few days.
