Windows 10 – How to disable the screen locking when screensaver comes on

March 13, 2018 by Wayne Small Leave a Comment

I had a request recently from a CEO of a company.  He wanted to be able to leave his computer running in his office and allow the screens to turn off WITHOUT the computer locking the screen.  That is – he was often in and out of his office, and he got tired of entering his password to unlock his computer every time he returned to it.  I did a fair bit of digging into this and even requested help from Microsoft, but unfortunately they didn’t have any ideas for me.

First up – go into Settings and then Power & Sleep options and ensure that you set the screen to turn off your monitor after 10 minutes (or whatever time you want)

Next – go into the old style screensaver settings – Control Panel > Screensaver settings and ensure that it’s set to 10 minutes (or the same time) as below.

Lastly – go into Settings and the Sign-in options and change the Require sign-in setting to NEVER.

I’ve tested this on both a domain joined Windows 10 Pro machine and a Microsoft Surface 3 machine running Windows 10 Home and it’s working fine.

I’m sure I don’t need to remind you however that implementing this should only be done in an environment where you totally trust people that could walk up to the keyboard while you are away.  Never leave it unlocked in public.

Hope this helps someone else as it kept me thinking for a few days as it didn’t appear to be well documented at all.
