Upgrading Client Licenses with the SBS 4.0 to 4.5 Upgrade

March 9, 2001 by Wayne Small 1 Comment

Just a note to save someone else the grief we went through. If you are upgrading from 4.0 or 4.0a to 4.5 and have additional client licenses for 4.0, you must install them under 4.0 before upgrading to 4.5. You will not be able to increase the client licenses using the 4.0 client add packs once 4.5 has been installed. We wanted a clean install of 4.5 so we started with 4.0 and installed all our apps before upgrading to 4.5. We waited until after the upgrade to add the licenses, which failed. MS Tech Support had no work-around other than to start over or purchase 4.5 client licenses. We would have bought the 4.5 licenses (20) if we could have gotten them that day, but as we couldn’t, we started from scratch. Don’t let this happen to you!

Also, if you have used the client bump packs once, you have to call MS to get a new password to use them again. You have to call for each floppy as you install them as they have individual keys. You will call the MS Tech Support line, but tell them you only need client license keys so you won’t be billed for the incident.
