SBS Resource Kit – Grey Lancaster

March 9, 2001 by Wayne Small Leave a Comment

The RES kit will be a free download avail real soon. So far all I have played with is 2 new apps to extend the functionality of SBS. There is one app that allows you to expand the VAP reporting tool and the Console itself.

The other is so you can add 3rd party apps to the list of software you want installed when you run the setup disc.

The VAP tool if you have not used it yet is under manage console, tasks, administration tools, config server status tool. I think this is great when you add backup logs to the list and then as a VAP/VAR/Administrator you can receive the backup logs VIA Email to ensure that everything is being backed up. This is a very important/billable function. For now I have attached a registry entry if you like to enter/play with yourself until the RES kit is avail. Simply dbl click it and you will see what happens. You can open it with notepad to suit your needs. You may need to use regedit to set the LastTime Sent (whatever) to 0 (zero) to kick it off. < >

Using the tools is very easy to add items/functionality to the console. You really need to order the RES kit and get the CD cause there are some limits/requirements to what you do (The CD just has more info). For Example if you had an entry to the Top Level pages of the console you can not link it to an .exe, but you can from the second level.

If you add a program to be installed. It must not be order dependant,(like, IE must be installed first), it must be able to install unattended, (answer no questions, where to install for example), and that it does not require a restart after installing.
