Password Reset on old Toshiba Laptops

February 13, 2010 by Wayne Small 3 Comments

I had a friend that had a very old Toshiba laptop mode number 2400-S201.  They lent the laptop to another friend for a while and when it came back it had a BIOS password on it.  The friends then had a falling out over this and the “friend” refused to tell them the password.  No big issue though as the laptop was not being used… until now… there was a specific program on this old laptop that was needed for a job.

I searched many places for a way to reset the password without luck.  I found a few references requiring me to take it to a Toshiba Service Centre but that was just going to cost money and be painful to organise.

Robert Gareb – a member of the Sydney SMB IT Professionals group gave me this clue… he told me that there was a loopback adapter that could be used to reset it.  What’s more is that he was able to give me the configuration.  I made it up and plugged the loopback in, powered the unit on and found the BIOS was reset – no more password.  Thanks Robert.

The  loopback was configured as below.  To make it you will need a 25 pin DB25 plug, and join these pins using wire;
Pins: 1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, and 18-25
