NOTE: This issue applies to ANY Domain Controller running on top of a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Platform
We’ve been fighting something very bad in the last week for a machine that was running on a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Platform. The problem is that we had a Hyper-V server reboot unexpectedly and as a result the guest machine was totally dead in the water. It was giving us Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with “c00002e2 Directory Services could not start because of the following error…”
After much investigation we found we could not recover the VM itself – we needed to revert to a previous backup which was painful indeed. We have found however that Microsoft are now aware of it and there is a KB 2853952 here
Long story short – if you virtualised ANY Windows 2012 Domain controller be is normal server or Windows Server 2012 Essentials then you MUST HAVE this patch installed on your hyper-V host.
Microsoft I understand have blogged about it here but there is yet to be a post on the SBS/Server Essentials blog.
